Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm) is an undergraduate degree course in the field of Pharmacy education. The students those are interested in the medical field (except to become a doctor) can choose this course after the completion of class 12th (PCM/B). After the completion of this degree, the students can practice as a Pharmacist. Pharmacists can work in a range of industries related to the prescription, manufacture & provision of medicines. The duration of this course is 4 years.

The B.Pharm is one of the popular job oriented course among the science students after class 12th. 1. Diploma in Pharmacy (D.Pharm):

2. Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm):

Eligibility

Students who want to join the B.Pharma programme have to fulfill the given eligibility criteria:

    For admission to the Pharmacy courses, student must have passed class 12th with Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics/Biology.
    Students have to secure a minimum of 50% marks in the qualifying examination.
    Students, those pass the three year Diploma in Pharmacy (D.Pharm) are also eligible.

Admission

To get admission into the Pharmacy course, students have to complete their 10+2 education & apply for national level or state level Pharmacy entrance exam. The national level entrance exam is Graduate Pharmacy Aptitude Test (GPAT 2018). You can also apply for the state level exams such as TS EAMCET 2018, AP EAMCET 2018, BCECE 2018, WBJEE 2018, etc as per the eligibility criteria of the exams.

There are various exams conducted by private and public universities for the admission to the various graduate and postgraduate Pharmacy courses. Salary

In India, there are many employment opportunities available for aspirants who completed their Pharmacy education. The salary in this profession varies from company to company in which an individual is working. The starting salary for a fresher in this field can be Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 18,000 per month in India. After gaining an experience in this field, you can earn approx Rs. 9 to 12 Lakh per annum. In abroad the starting salary could be anywhere between $15000 to $25000 per annum.

4. Doctorate in Pharmacy (Pharm.D):

Pharm.D is a professional degree honored for students who undergo their graduation course in Pharmacy Doctoral Programme. The Pharm D took its origin from a latin word ‘Pharmacaie Doctor’ signifying ‘Doctor of Pharmacy’. The pharmacy education in India is under the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) which initiated the 6 years Pharm.D course in India from the year 2008. The course is registered under the Pharmacy Act of 1948.

The Pharm.D course comes in two types:

    One is Pharm.D course with duration of five years and besides this students will have to work as an intern or do the residency for 1 year.
    Second one is Pharm.D (post Baccalaureate) where in the duration of the course is 3 years including 2 years theoretical study plus one year internship or residency as per PCI.

Pharmacy Council of India is the sole body that decides the number of admissions taken for the Pharm.D course. It differs from time to time. Currently it offers admission for 30 seats in Pharm.D and 10 Seats for Pharm.D (PB) every year. The course does not confine to theoretical study alone. It broadens its programme towards penetrative laboratory experiments and many research objects. Only few colleges in India offers Pharm.D course recognized by PCI.

Advantages or Benefits of Doing Doctor of Pharmacy

    As the Pharma.D is course that offers doctoral pharmacy, those who perform pharmacy as their profession under the Pharmacy Act will be entitled to prefix ‘Dr’ before their name.
    Pharm. D course is registered under the Pharmacy Act of 1948 for undergoing pharmacy as a profession.
    After graduation in Pharm.D, students can opt for Ph.D programmes if they are qualified.

Eligibility Criteria for PHARM D program

For Pharm.D (6 year course):

All the aspirants who apply for Pharm.D course must have cleared their higher secondary board examination with chemistry or physics as obligatory subjects together with Biology or Math.

Those who pass in D.Pharm course can also apply provided the institution from which they took the degree should be recognized under section 12 of the Pharmacy Act lay down by the Pharmacy Council of India.

For Pharm.D (Post Baccalaureate):

Those who have passed B.Pharm from an institute recognized by the Pharmacy Council of India under the division 12 of the Pharmacy Act can apply for Pharm.D (Post Baccalaureate).

Admission Procedure for Pharm.D program

The performance of students in the qualifying board exam is the main criteria for selection towards Pharm.D program. Students will be selected based on the merit list prepared by the institution on the basis of the applications received from applicants
